Infectious laryngotracheïtis (ILT) in fowl

Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) is a contagious respiratory disease caused by a herpesvirus. The virus spreads easily through dust particles, respiratory secretions and direct contact between animals. ILT mainly affects the upper respiratory tract and causes symptoms such as laboured breathing, coughing, nasal discharge, bloody mucus from the beak or nostrils, and eye inflammation. In more severe cases, animals may also show respiratory distress, rattling breathing and a marked decline in condition.

Controlling ILT relies largely on preventive vaccination. The vaccine is often given by the wing-web method (a stab into the wing fold) and is regularly available as a combination vaccine with the fowl pox vaccine. Vaccination usually takes place at 8 to 13 weeks of age. To maintain sufficient, long-lasting protection, annual revaccination is recommended.
